I am concerned about a friend who I suspect may be suffering from depression. Can you tell me the symptoms of depression?

Symptoms of major depression include: • No interest in things you used to enjoy • Depressed mood • Feeling slowed down or feeling restless • Feeling worthless or guilty • Appetite disturbance • Thoughts about suicide • Concentration impairment • Sleep disturbance • Fatigue. Someone with major depression has at least five of these symptoms lasting for two weeks or longer. More than 80% of depressed patients will respond to at least one of several available antidepressant medications. Counseling with a mental health therapist can add to the effectiveness of drugs. Treatment needs to continue four to twelve months after full recover is achieved.
