Current Studies

Welcome to the Northeast Iowa Medical Education Foundation Research Department Current Studies site. Review the list of the studies to see if you are interested.  You will need to visit with your physician or our research coordinators about eligibility to participate.  Your questions will be answered by our experienced and professional research staff who have been trained to treat multitudes of medical conditions and illnesses.  They will review with you what your participation in our clinical studies will entail, so you understand the treatment, medication and protocols.  All medications that are currently available by prescription had to go through clinical studies to be FDA approved.  Your participation in these studies will assist the pharmaceutical and healthcare industries in developing the newest and effective medications for your medical condition. Fill out the eligibility form to see if you pre-qualify today.

AEGIS-II

  • AEGIS-II is a clinical trial for patients who have had a heart attack.  Northeast Iowa Family Practice Center collaborates with MercyOne Waterloo to make this study available within the Cedar Valley.  The trial involves an investigational biologic that is hypothesized to reduce the plaque burden of patients who have had a heart attack.  This trial is only available to patients who are in the hospital at MercyOne Waterloo.  This study is currently enrolling patients.

ATOM

  • ATOM is a clinical trial for men with osteoporosis.  Osteoporosis is a disease state in which bone density is reduced.  Reduced bone density can lead to fractures (broken bones).  This clinical trial studies the drug abaloparatide.  Abaloparatide is a once daily inject currently being used to treat women who have osteoporosis.  It is now being studied to verify its safety and effectiveness in men.  This study is closed for enrollment.

Clear Outcomes

  • Clear Outcomes is a large cardiovascular outcomes trial of bempedoic acid.  Bempedoic acid was recently FDA approved as a cholesterol medication.  The goal of this study is to determine whether or not bempedoic acid can reduce cardiovascular events (heart attack, stroke, death) in patients who are statin intolerant.  This study is closed for enrollment.

Fourier OLE

  • Fourier OLE is an open label extension of the double blinded Fourier trial.  Open label extension studies are often used to evaluate long term safety and efficacy of drugs.  In open label studies, there is no possibility of placebo.  This study evaluates Repatha, a twice monthly injection used to reduce cholesterol.  This study is closed for enrollment.

WearABLE

  • Abaloparatide is a drug utilized to treat women with osteoporosis.  It is traditionally given as a daily subcutaneous injection.  This study evaluates the safety and effectiveness of delivering the drug through a microneedle patch the size of a penny.   This study is closed for enrollment.

CSL312-COVID-19

  • The Northeast Iowa Family Practice Center partners with MercyOne Waterloo to bring this clinical trial to Cedar Valley patients impacted by COVID-19 pneumonia.  This trial involves a monoclonal antibody that inhibits factor XII.  Factor XII is a clotting factor which initiates different clotting cascades, as well as serves a roll in the body’s inflammatory process.  This trial is only available to patients who are in the hospital at MercyOne Waterloo.  This study is currently enrolling patients.

HF-Evolution

  • This clinical trial involves a device, rather than a drug.  The BioBeat watch is being trialed for patients who have recently been hospitalized for heart failure.  The BioBeat watch calculates many different cardiac parameters including blood pressure, heart rate, and cardiac output.  The data from the watch is then used to assist the patient’s care team in making drug choices for the patient. This study is currently enrolling patients.

cvMOBIUS

  • cvMOBIUS is an observational study for patients who are prescribed Repatha through their primary care doctor.  Observational studies follow patients through a period of time and evaluate changes in patients’ health status.  This study is not yet enrolling patients.
